Become a Public Speaker!

Becoming a public speaker allows you to build credibility and establish yourself as an expert in your field, enhancing your personal and professional reputation. It provides opportunities to connect with diverse audiences, expand your network, and influence or inspire others.

Listening to an expert public speaker gives the audience access to valuable insights, practical knowledge, and firsthand experiences, which can deepen their understanding of a topic. It offers inspiration and motivation, helping them apply new ideas to their personal or professional lives.

1) Define your purpose and niche

• Purpose: Why do you want to become a public speaker? Do you want to inform, inspire or entertain people? Your goal will give you direction.
• Niche: Choose a topic in which you specialize or in which you have a unique perspective. This is possible, for example leadership, personal development, technology, finance, or health.

2) Improve your speaking skills

• Write speeches regularly: Start writing speeches on your chosen topic. This will help you to formulate message clearly.
• Practice your presentation: Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself and analyze your body language, facial expressions, and use of voice. Use feedback to improve yourself.
• Discover the secrets, knowledge and benefits of non-verbal communication: How could it be that 80% of all professionals have little knowledge of body language? And, why is it that +90% of all communication is non-verbal? Did you know that mastering Body Language can give you an additional global language, yielding amazing results?
• Take courses or workshops: There are many courses available, both online and in-person, that can help you with speaking in public. Think of rhetoric, storytelling and overcoming stage fright.

3) Learn to deal with stage fright

• Relaxation techniques: Learn techniques such as breathing exercises or meditation to stay calm before and during a presentation.
• Positive visualization: Visualize a successful speech where the audience responds enthusiastically.
• Gain experience: The more you speak, the more comfortable you become. Start with smaller groups and work up to larger events.

4) Build your personal brand, create an online presence website:

• Create a website that: presents yourself, your topics, and your experience as a speaker. Add videos of your speeches.
• Social media: Use platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram to share your expertise and build an audience.
• Blog or vlog: Write regular blogs or make videos about your expertise. This positions you as an authority within your niche.
• Create a speaker's reel: A short video showing highlights of your speeches. This is important for potential customers and event organizers.

5) Find and create opportunities to speak

• Networking: Attend events, conferences, and gatherings within your field. Talk to organizers and offer to speak for free to gain experience.
• Pitch yourself: Prepare a pitch in which you explain your value as a speaker and why you add value offers value to a specific audience. Send these to conference organizers or companies.
• Use online platforms: Sign up for platforms like SpeakerHub or TEDx, where speakers are sought for events.
• Organize your own events: If you have trouble finding options, organize a lecture yourself or workshop. This gives you complete control and can be a great way to expand your network.

6) Refine your message

• Ask for feedback: Ask for feedback from your audience and organizers after each speech. This helps you get your message across improve presentation skills.
• Listen to other speakers: Watch TED Talks and lectures from speakers you admire. Analyze their style and techniques to learn from them yourself.

7) Build a portfolio

• References: Ask organizations you have spoken to for recommendations or references.
• Videos and Photos: Make sure you have recordings and photos of every talk you give so you can use it in your portfolio and on your website.

8) Make money as a speaker

• Set a rate: Decide how much you want to charge per reading. This depends on your experience and the value you provide.
• Negotiate: Don't be afraid to negotiate with organizers, especially if you're just starting out.
• Sell books or products: If you have books or courses, you can sell them during your lectures for extra generate income.

9) Keep learning and growing

• Keeping up with trends: Public speaking is constantly changing. Stay informed of new techniques and trends within your field.
• Feedback and self-reflection: Continually evaluate and improve yourself.

10) Network with other speakers

• Speaker Conferences: Participate in events and gatherings with other speakers. This helps not only with networking, but also with learning from more experienced professionals.
