Welcome, I'm René Deceuninck from the Body Language company in London UK. For the last 26 years, I've been studying and teaching at the same time. I shared stages with Brian Tracy, Jairek Robbins, Jack Canfield and many other influential speakers all over the world. Pre-Covid, I also use to host preview sessions for Anthony Robbins' UPW Event.
That been said... In this video, I will share the 7 steps to become an online personality attracting people towards you instead of pushing them away.
#1 - LIGHT - Sit in front of a window facing natural daylight not the other way around. You can use a ring light, if possible 2, one on your left and one on your right in order for the ring light not to reflect in your eyes or glasses or ... use the slightly larger square lights on tripod, again one on your left and one on your right in order to have an optimal result.
#2 - BACKGROUND - Avoid kids running around, Mirrors, laundry laying around. Make sure the background is need and tidy. The use of a virtual background is not always the best choice, however, the best result with a virtual background is having a real green background better known as a backdrop. These 2 tripods are connected through a long bar on top and you can attach a green backdrop or any other backdrop, even a nice curtain would do the job.
#3 - NOTIFY - Notify other people in the office or in your house you'll be in an online meeting or recording. Notify your kids with a time slot, that way they have an idea when it's safe again to run around. -
#4 - PAY ATTENTION - While being online, never get distracted by checking your emails, browsing to websites, looking on your phone, start eating, you're in fact saying to the viewer: "I'm not interested" because, .. you're not 100% engaging. If you really, urgently have to do something, example, going to the bathroom, close your video and mute your mic.
#5 - BODY LANGUAGE - The most important part that will appear on the screen is your face! Your facial expressions will have an influence on the conscious and subconscious mind of the other person watching you.
There are over 264,000 micro-expressions, however, the 7 basic ones are Smile, Happiness, Contempt, Disgust, Anger, Surprise and Sadness.
Did you know that you're sending out 40 bits of data per second from conscious to conscious mind? These are the things that are happening in the moment. However, did you know that you're sending out 40 million bits of data per second from subconscious to subconscious mind which is the non-verbal communication, in other words, the tone of voice and body language. The feedback, reaction or reply from the viewers will be based on what you send out. Does that make sense?
Example, you did sent out a message including facial expressions and some hand gestures. This information will be processed in the brain of the other person and will come back to you. That's why it's been said that the outside world is in fact a reflection of yourself.
Concerning your eyes, make sure to look into the camera and not to the screen. When looking into the camera, you're making eye contact with the one watching you. There are 2 important things to remember, eye contact and leveling, be on the same frequency, it's called mirror matching. Make sure to sit right up or stand up and that the camera is at the hight of your eyes.
Last but not least, make sure people can see you from the center of your body and up. That way, you can use your hands to better accentuate certain things and make optimal use of your body language.
#6 - APPEARANCE - Pay attention to what you wear. Keep it neutral and businesslike if possible. I saw situations where a guy was in a suit, however, the mirror behind him showed that the lower part was in his pajamas. SO WATCH OUT!! do not exaggerate with make-up and jewelry, however, don't have that Monday morning, it's not my day look neither.
#7 - TECHNICAL - Make sure to use the correct light. Use a microphone or clip-on mic, most video settings will allow you to enhance your skin appearance and enable HD. A stable table or surface for your phone or laptop is not a luxury, when your device is constantly moving, people get seasick. A backdrop as explained earlier is an amazing thing to have.
